Which level of perspective are you on?

Most people practicing perspective are working on the wrong level, usually one that's several steps past where they actually are. That's why it keeps falling apart.

There are five levels. Four questions will tell you which one you're on, and what to practice next.

Answer the four questions below in order.

The first one you answer "no" to is your level.
Stop there and read that section.

Be honest with yourself. Nobody's watching, and answering yes to something you can only sort-of do just means you'll practise the wrong thing for another six months.

The four questions

1. If you draw two objects, can someone else tell which one is closer, without you explaining it?

2. Can you draw a group of objects that all sit in the same space, at the same angle, consistently?

3. With a horizon line and vanishing points, can you build a room and furnish it so everything lines up?

4. Can you turn a chair thirty degrees away from the table, or draw a door standing half open, and have it still hold up?

Said yes to all four? Then you're past the point this check is designed for. Read level 5 anyway; it's short, and it's might not be what you think.

Level 1 - Flat

What it is: no perspective at all. Depth comes from overlap, from relative size, and from where you place things in the frame.

Who works here on purpose: Keith Haring. Most picture books. Poster design, icon design, an enormous amount of comics. This is not a beginner's version of perspective, it's the absence of it, and people build entire careers here.

If your drawings feel flat and you've been blaming perspective, check something first: can a stranger tell what's happening in your drawing? Most problems people blame on perspective are really staging and readability, and those live at this level.

Your exercise: draw a scene with one simple figure and two object, for example in a kitchen. Then use overlap to say what’s in front.
A horizon line and vanishing points are not allowed, just use shapes.

In the DFIA: this is the 2D phase, figures, staging, and telling a story in a scene before any perspective enters.

Level 2 - Tilted

What it is: isometric. Verticals stay vertical, every receding edge uses the same angle, and nothing converges. You're faking depth, and it works, because a viewer reads a consistent angle as space without ever checking whether it's correct.

Isometric isn't a simplified version of perspective. It's a different system that trades the vanishing point for consistency, and that trade is exactly why so much professional work chooses it. Nothing distorts. Everything stays measurable. Almost every strategy game and technical blueprint you've ever seen uses it.

Most people never consider this as an option at all. It's worth sitting here for a while.

Your exercise: draw a scene, of whatever you want, in isometric perspective. Try to keep the angles of all the objects aligned. Once things start to shift it will start to feel wonky.

In the DFIA: the 2.5D phase, where you build a scene in isometric and put figures into it.

Level 3 - Constructed space

What it is: one- and two-point perspective. A horizon line, and a grid to build on. These two sit together because once you have a horizon and one vanishing point, adding the second is a small step rather than a new skill.

This is the level most working artists spend most of their time in, and it's the easiest one to place figures in, everyone stands on the same ground and crosses the horizon at the same height. If you only ever learn one level properly, make it this one.

Your exercise: Try this one.

In the Academy: the 3D scenes phase, the horizon line, one-point, two-point, and placing figures in a constructed space.

Level 4 - Off the grid

What it is: objects stop being aligned to the room. Turn a chair thirty degrees and it needs its own pair of vanishing points. Open a door, another pair. Or start using a 3 point perspective.

This is where most people who think they know perspective are actually stuck. It's also the difference between drawing a room and drawing a place, real rooms are full of things at their own angles, and a drawing where everything is square reads as a diagram.

Your exercise: Same horizon, one box sitting on the grid. Now draw that same box rotated roughly fifteen degrees — which means finding a new pair of vanishing points, on the same horizon, for that box alone. Then thirty. Then forty-five. Four boxes, four pairs of points, one horizon.

Then try it for real: a chair pushed back and turned away from a table.

You've cleared this level when: you can draw a half-open door, correctly, on the first attempt.
