Drawing Figures From Imagination
We all dream of drawing freely from imagination, confidently, expressively, without relying on reference. But imagination drawing isn’t talent. It’s a skill.
A learnable system. This page is your starting point.
Draw With Confidence - Even When There’s No Reference
I’ve been obsessed with drawing for as long as I can remember - but one question haunted me for years: Why can I draw well from observation… yet freeze when I try to draw from imagination?
I could copy anything I saw, but inventing a pose or placing a figure in space always felt impossible. Then I discovered Kim Jung Gi, and suddenly I wasn’t just frustrated - I was determined.
“How does he DO that? Why can’t I?”
That moment started the journey that shaped everything I teach today.
The Hard Way (that I took, so you don’t have to)
For years, I tried solving my imagination problem by doing what most beginners do: learning more anatomy, copying masters and studying the fundamentals. None of it worked. In fact, it made everything more overwhelming.
The real issue wasn’t my drawing ability - it was how I approached the fundamentals. I was studying gesture, form, perspective and anatomy separately, hoping one of them would “unlock” everything.
But drawing from imagination is built from layers, not isolated skills. Start with a gesture → add simple forms → place them in space → then refine with anatomy. Once I simplified both the figure and how I learned, everything finally clicked.
